Gujranwala

Gujranwala

Gujranwala, the capital of the Gujranwala Division in Pakistan, is known as the “City of Wrestlers” and famous for its delicious food. It is the fifth most populous city in Pakistan, founded in the 18th century, and has a rich history as the capital of the Sukerchakia Misl state from 1763 to 1799. The city is also the birthplace of Maharaja Ranjit Singh, the founder of the Sikh Empire.

Today, Gujranwala is Pakistan’s third-largest industrial center, contributing significantly to the national GDP. Along with nearby cities Sialkot and Gujrat, it forms the “Golden Triangle” of industrial cities with export-oriented economies. The city’s name means “Abode of the Gujjars,” named after the local Gujjar tribe. Gujranwala is a bustling metropolitan area with a population of over two million, divided into various administrative units, and plays a vital role in the country’s economy.

History of Gujranwala

History of Gujranwala

Founding

Gujranwala was established by the Gurjars in the 18th century, though its origins are somewhat unclear. It is believed to have started as a village in the mid-16th century. The city was initially known as Khanpur Sansi, but recent research suggests it may have been named Serai Gujran, a village mentioned during Ahmad Shah Abdali’s invasions in the 18th century.

Sikh Era

In the 18th century, Gujranwala became significant under Charat Singh of the Sukerchakia Misl, who established a fort in the area between 1756 and 1758. Charat Singh made Gujranwala the capital of his misl in 1763. The city remained a crucial center of the Sikh Empire until Maharaja Ranjit Singh shifted the capital to Lahore in 1799. During this period, Hari Singh Nalwa fortified the city and laid out its current grid street plan.

British Era

Gujranwala was captured by the British Empire in 1848 and saw rapid development thereafter. It was incorporated as a municipality in 1867, with significant infrastructure such as the Brandreth, Khiyali, and Lahori Gates constructed by 1869. The British also established educational institutions and improved connectivity with the opening of the North-Western Railway in 1881.

Post-Partition and Modern Era

The Partition of India in 1947 led to violent upheaval in Gujranwala, with significant impacts on its demographic and social fabric due to the influx of refugees. The city saw substantial industrial growth in the following decades, with new suburban areas developed and an increase in factories. Modern developments include the Sialkot-Lahore Motorway and ongoing infrastructure improvements, solidifying Gujranwala’s status as a key industrial center in Pakistan.
