Pakistani security forces carried out a significant intelligence-based operation in Lakki Marwat, a district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa known for recurring militant activity. According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), at least 17 militants belonging to the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) were killed in the encounter. The operation was planned after credible intelligence suggested the presence of a militant network in the area.
Militants Termed “Khwarij” with External Backing
The ISPR described the militants as “Khwarij / Fitna al Khwarij,” a term drawn from early Islamic history used to denote violent rebels. This framing is aimed at undercutting the group’s attempts to justify their actions through religious narratives. The military further alleged that the network had foreign support, specifically calling them “Indian-sponsored,” a claim consistent with past accusations of cross-border involvement in destabilizing Pakistan’s security landscape.

Weapons Recovered, Area Secured
During the operation, a cache of weapons, ammunition, and explosives was seized, which authorities believe was meant to fuel further attacks in the region. Following the raid, security forces initiated a sanitization operation to locate additional hideouts, dismantle logistical support systems, and prevent regrouping of surviving militants. Local sources reported increased troop movement across the district to ensure no escape routes remained open.
Prime Minister Commendation
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif praised the military’s efforts, calling the success a reflection of “professionalism, courage, and unwavering commitment.” He reaffirmed the government’s resolve to eliminate terrorism from Pakistan, stressing that militant outfits would never be allowed to undermine national peace or development. His remarks also served to reassure the public at a time when concerns about rising attacks in KP have been growing.

Lakki Marwat Troubled Past
The district of Lakki Marwat has a troubled history of insurgency and militant violence. In recent years, the area has witnessed frequent drive-by shootings, targeted bombings, and ambushes against both civilians and security personnel. Its geographic location — connecting the tribal belt with settled areas of KP — makes it strategically significant for militants attempting to expand their influence. The porous terrain also provides cover for regrouping and movement of armed groups.
Broader Anti-Militancy Campaign
This operation reflects Pakistan’s ongoing counterterrorism campaign in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, particularly in Lakki Marwat and other former tribal areas, where TTP-linked cells and allied militant outfits continue to operate. While targeted raids weaken their networks, analysts caution that long-term peace depends on addressing root causes, including cross-border sanctuaries, local recruitment, and financing channels.
Security experts emphasize that continued vigilance, community engagement in Lakki Marwat, and regional cooperation will be essential to consolidate gains and prevent militant resurgence in Pakistan’s northwest.
