Arrest and Bail of Shershah Khan

Shershah Khan, the son of Aleema Khan and nephew of former prime minister Imran Khan, was arrested on August 22, 2025, from outside his residence. He was first sent on a five-day physical remand and later to jail under judicial custody.

His bail plea was approved by ATC Judge Manzar Ali Gill, against a surety bond of Rs100,000. The judge noted that the prosecution failed to present concrete evidence, including the complete case record, despite multiple hearings.

Legal Arguments and Court Proceedings

Shershah’s lawyer, Advocate Rana Mudassar Umer, argued that no direct evidence linked his client to the Jinnah House attack. He emphasized that others with more serious charges had already been granted bail.

He also claimed that the prosecution’s evidence, such as the recovery of a cane, was planted, and the identification by another suspect was not legally sufficient.

Shershah’s Brother Also Granted Bail

This court ruling follows a similar decision a day earlier when Shershah’s brother, Shahrez Khan, a known triathlete, was also granted bail in a related case. Both brothers were arrested in late August during a renewed crackdown linked to the May 9, 2023 riots.

Political Reactions and Family’s Response

Speaking outside the court, Aleema Khan expressed relief over the bail but criticized the arrests. She called the process political victimisation, referring to her sons’ arrests as part of the ongoing pressure campaign against Imran Khan’s family.

She also highlighted that Imran Khan remains jailed in the Al-Qadir Trust case, and that the legal system is being used to silence political dissent.

The May 9 Riots

The May 9 protests erupted nationwide after Imran Khan’s arrest, leading to attacks on state and military buildings, including Jinnah House and the GHQ in Rawalpindi. The military later declared it a “Black Day” and began trying suspects under the Army Act.

Conclusion

The release of Imran Khan’s nephew marks a significant development in the May 9 cases. With growing national and international concerns over political arrests, the case continues to unfold amid legal and political tensions.
