Deacon Blue, one of Scotland most beloved bands, is heartbroken after the death of founding member James Prime. The keyboardist passed away at 64 following a short battle with cancer.
The band confirmed the news on June 19, 2024, with an emotional statement:
“We announce with great sadness that our brother James Prime passed away this morning after a short struggle with cancer. Thank you for all the love and support.”
Prime was a key figure in Deacon Blue success, co-writing hits like “Dignity” and “Real Gone Kid.” His death has left fans and the music world in mourning.
Prime was with the band since its formation in 1985 in Glasgow. Alongside Ricky Ross (lead singer), he helped create their signature pop-rock sound.
Prime had been “seriously ill” for weeks before his passing. The band revealed earlier in June that he was in hospital intensive care. Despite his condition, he encouraged the group to continue their 2024 tour without him.
