Chinese BYD Destroys Bugatti Top Speed Record

Chinese BYD, through its luxury sub-brand Yangwang, has dethroned Bugatti from its long-held dominance at the top of the speed charts. The groundbreaking Yangwang U9 Xtreme, an all-electric hypercar, has now claimed the title of the world’s fastest production car, surpassing the legendary Bugatti Chiron Super Sport 300+.

Record-Breaking Run

On September 14, 2025, German racing driver Marc Basseng drove the Yangwang U9 Xtreme at the Papenburg test track in Germany. The car clocked an astonishing 496 km/h (≈ 308.3 mph), officially setting a new top-speed record for a production vehicle.

This achievement breaks the previous record of 490.48 km/h (304.77 mph) set by the Bugatti Chiron Super Sport 300+ back in 2019.

The U9 Xtreme is powered by a 4-motor electric powertrain delivering 2,978–3,027 hp (approximately 3000 hp). It runs on a 1,200-volt system with a Lithium iron phosphate Blade Battery, combined with semi-slick tyres and active suspension, ensuring stability and control at extreme speeds. Only 30 units of this hypercar will be built, making it not just a record-setter but also an ultra-exclusive machine.
