The Philippines mourns the loss of a music legend. Freddie Aguilar, the folk singer-songwriter who touched millions with his timeless songs like “Anak” and “Bayan Ko,” passed away on May 27, 2025, at the age of 72. His death was confirmed by his wife, Jovie Albao, and his lawyer.
Aguilar music became the voice of the Filipino people, blending heartfelt storytelling with themes of love, struggle, and patriotism. His passing marks the end of an era, but his songs will live on forever.
Born Ferdinand Pascual Aguilar on February 5, 1953, in Isabela, Philippines, Freddie grew up surrounded by music. He taught himself guitar at 17 and began writing songs at just 14.
Despite enrolling in Electrical Engineering, he dropped out at 18 to pursue music, performing in bars and clubs across Manila. His big break came in 1978 with “Anak” (“Child“), a song about a parents love and regret.
“Anak” became a global phenomenon, selling 33 million copies worldwide and being translated into 51 languages. Though it didn’t win the 1978 Metro Manila Popular Music Festival, it remains the best-selling Filipino song of all time.
Aguilar music wasn’t just entertainment—it was a cultural force. His rendition of “Bayan Ko” (“My Country“) became the anthem of the 1986 People Power Revolution, which overthrew dictator Ferdinand Marcos.

In 2018, a fire destroyed Aguilar home, along with priceless memorabilia. Still, he continued performing, even opening his own venue, “Ka Freddie.”
Aguilar died at the Philippine Heart Center in Quezon City on May 27, 2025. His exact cause of death has not been disclosed, but he had been hospitalized before his passing.
