Orangi Town Karachi is one of the largest residential areas in the city, located in the northwestern part of Karachi, Sindh, Pakistan. It is a densely populated locality that has developed over decades, offering housing, infrastructure, and essential amenities to its residents. This comprehensive area guide provides valuable insights into Orangi Town, covering its history, infrastructure, postal details, healthcare facilities, and directions.
Orangi Town was established in 1965 as a township planned by the Karachi Development Authority (KDA). It was initially spread over 1,300 acres and aimed at accommodating Karachi’s growing population, particularly squatter settlements relocated from other parts of the city.
The population of Orangi Town increased significantly in the 1970s, particularly after the Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971. Many refugees from East Pakistan (now Bangladesh) settled in Orangi, contributing to its rapid expansion.
During the 1980s, Orangi Town gained recognition due to the Orangi Pilot Project (OPP), initiated by Akhtar Hameed Khan. Due to the lack of municipal services, residents took matters into their own hands, financing and developing a low-cost sewerage system.
In 2000, the federal government introduced local government reforms, which led to the creation of the City District Government Karachi (CDGK). Orangi Town became one of the 18 autonomous towns of Karachi.
After the dissolution of CDGK in 2011, Orangi Town remained under bureaucratic administration until 2015 when it was restructured as part of the newly formed Orangi District (formerly Karachi West District).
Orangi Town Karachi is equipped with essential infrastructure, including roads, schools, colleges, playgrounds, and healthcare centers. Despite facing periodic shortages of water and gas, residents continue to thrive in the area.
